Supporting Sustainable Biomass Utilisation Through Capacity Building and Technical Support to Long-Term Fuel Suppliers of the NamPower’s Otjikoto Biomass Power Station.

As part of the Environmental and Social Support(ESS) Capacity Building Programme for the Otjikoto Biomass Power Station (OBPS), the Namibia Biomass Industry Group (N-BiG) successfully delivered the first technical training and support to one of the Long-Term Fuel Suppliers (Omuriro Biomass Investment -OBI – Transworld Cargo team) in Tsumeb from 11–12 June 2026.

As one of NamPower’s Long-Term Fuel Suppliers to the 40 MW Otjikoto Biomass Power Station, OBI plays a vital role in ensuring a sustainable and reliable biomass fuel supply. The training was designed to strengthen harvesting operations and enhance participants’ technical competencies in implementing biomass harvesting activities in accordance with industry best practices, environmental safeguards, and project requirements.

The training covered key aspects of sustainable biomass harvesting, environmental compliance, occupational health and safety, post-harvest management, and responsible operational practices. By equipping field managers and operators with practical knowledge and skills, the training contributes to improved operational efficiency, environmental stewardship, and long-term sustainability within the biomass value chain.

As a member of the ESS-OBPS Consortium, N-BiG is responsible for supporting the development of a sustainable biomass supply chain through technical assistance, capacity building, and the promotion of responsible biomass harvesting practices. Through capacity building and training, N-BiG continues to strengthen Namibia’s biomass sector while fostering compliance with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) principles and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) requirements.

This initiative is supported by the Mitigation Action Facility and the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM), in partnership with NamPower.
